Project Description:

The City of Sumas is in the process of updating its Shoreline Management Master Program, which guides and regulates development adjacent to the Sumas River and Johnson Creek. In general, the Shoreline Program goals, policies and regulations affect land within 200 feet of the Sumas River or Johnson Creek, plus those wetland areas located within the 100-year floodplain. The City’s Shoreline Program was last updated in 1999.

As part of the Shoreline Master Program update, the City prepared a Shoreline Inventory and Analysis Report. In 2011, the City provided the public and state and federal resource agencies the opportunity to review and comment on the Inventory Report, which can be accessed using the link below under Documents.

The City has recently prepared a new draft Shoreline Management Master Program document, which is now available for review and comment. The draft Shoreline Master Program documents, including the draft Official Shoreline Map, can be accessed using the link below under Documents. Comments should be provided by June 11, 2012 and may be sent by mail to: City of Sumas, P.O. Box 9, Sumas, WA 98295; or by e-mail to:

The process of reviewing and adopting the proposed Shoreline Master Program is now underway and will be completed by June 2012.
